Sales stall for the world's cheapest car: Tata Nano.

India's launch of the world's cheapest car, the Nano, was expected to create a vast new market segment in the nation of 1.2 billion people, but reality has fallen short of expectations.

"We are at the gates, offering a new form of transportation to the people of India," said a proud Tata chairman Ratan Tata at the unveiling three years ago of the globally-hyped vehicle.
Tata, who spearheaded the Nano's development as a way to get India's masses off two wheels and onto four, was likened by some to Henry Ford, who revolutionised the US car market with the Model T.
But the Nano's fortunes have gone into a tailspin with last month's sales of the snub-nosed "people's car" plunging 85 percent from a year earlier to an all-time low of 509 units, despite a rapidly expanding vehicle market.
While the five-seater Nano, which hit the roads with a price tag of 100,000 rupees (2,500 dollars), has battled troubles such as fires in some of its cars and production delays, other small cars have boasted impressive sales figures.
In November, 33,000 of the next cheapest car on the market, the Alto from Japanese-owned market leader Maruti Suzuki, drove out of showrooms even though they cost twice the price.
In an effort to get the Nano back on track, Tata Motors this month offered a " Tata Nano Happiness Guarantee," more than doubling its warranty to four years from 18 months, and throwing in a maintenance contract for just 99 rupees a month.
The company, India's largest vehicle maker, followed up that sweetener with "fast-track" financing for buyers wanting loans to purchase the car, allowing loans of up to 90 percent to be approved in just 48 hours.
The Nano's woes began even before it rolled off the assembly line when farmers in communist-ruled West Bengal state, led by a charismatic opposition leader, protested that they had been forcibly ejected from their land to build the Nano plant.
Tata Motors, which also owns premier British marques Jaguar and Land Rover, was forced to abandon its nearly completed factory and shift to the western state of Gujarat, meaning production of the first 100,000 cars was badly delayed.
Recently, the car's image has been hurt by a series of fires, one of which was replayed frequently on Indian television, showing a Nano engulfed in flames. "Quality perception over safety of the car could be a concern," Mahantesh Sabarad, analyst at Mumbai's Fortune Equity Brokers, said.
There were no injuries as a result of the fires and a company spokesman insisted that the Tata Nano is a "safe car with a robust design."
Tata Motors has announced a free safety upgrade involving new features being added to the exhaust and electrical system. "The car needs a lot of image engineering," said automobile commentator Murad Ali Baig.
Another problem is that the Nano's price has gone up from the nice round launch figure of 100,000 rupees as a result of a rise in input costs, to 137,000 rupees for the basic model without airconditioning.
The cheapest Nano with an airconditioner is 160,000 rupees. "For the price of Nano, there are good second-hand cars on the market with air conditioning," Baig said.
Analysts say that Tata Motors, with its deep pockets, still has the capacity to turn around the fortunes of the Nano, which is just 3.1 metres long but has won rave reviews for its spacious interior.
"The really good thing for Tata is that those people who have the car are happy with it. Word of mouth is a slow process but I still think the car has potential," said Hormuz Sorabjee, editor of India's leading automobile magazine Autocar .

The Mercedes Benz Black Desire.

Prior Design presented its take on the latest generation Mercedes E-Class Coupe, called Black Desire. The tuning package is mostly about visual enhancements, however, upon request, the tuning firm also offers various engine conversions.
For the front of the car designers chose a new bumper with side vents and a prominent spoiler lip. The new parts feature sharper edges, a theme that’s continued with the side skirts. At the rear we can find a bumper extension with three fins, boot lip and roof spoiler, all available in carbon fiber as an option.
The black paintjob is complemented by metallic accents, found around the grille and custom Prior Design logo replacing the Mercedes star, on the side of the car and rear bumper. The same metal trim was used for the window surrounds.
Enormous, 20-inch Prior GT wheels, available in matte black, gloss black and silver, and a 4-tip stainless steel exhaust system round up the exterior changes.
Depending on the engine found under the bonnet, Prior offers numerous power upgrades, boosting peak output by up to 75 hp. Paired with a 35 mm lowering applied to the suspension, the performance package should make the Black Desire faster and better handling than the stock model.
According to the company, the Black Desire tuning package can also be fitted on the E-Class Convertible, while both Mercs can be ordered with a range of carbon fiber trim parts for the interior.

The KIA Sportage wins yet another award.

The newly launched Kia Sportage has won the category of ‘Junior SUV’, the Kia Sorento was awarded top prize in the SUV category and Kia itself scooped the ‘4x4 Manufacturer of the year’ award in Total Off Road magazines 2011 4x4 of the Year awards.

Michael Cole, Managing Director, Kia Motors (UK) Limited said “we’ve always been confident about the abilities of the Kia Sportage and Kia Sorento and are delighted that these have been recognised by one of the UK’s leading off-road magazines. Being chosen as Total Off Road’s manufacturer of the year is the icing on the cake.”
The Kia Sportage had competition from 18 mainstream and premium models including the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Volvo XC60 and the Ford Kuga. The Kia Sorento was up against rivals including luxury brands such as Range Rover and Lexus.

The Mini Paceman.

The MINI model range continues to grow at a Pace! The firm is readying Coupé and Roadster versions of the hatch, plus a new small model – and now it’s set to unveil the stunning Paceman at the Detroit Motor Show in January.

It’s based on the recently launched Countryman crossover, and shares that model’s platform. But the designers have given the Paceman a much more sleek and desirable shape as MINI gets ready to take the fight to the new Range Rover Evoque.
At the front, a single black mask incorporates the radiator, foglights and air intakes. The grille has been redesigned, too, with a thick chrome surround, horizontal strips of light blue chrome to match the roof, piano black inserts and thin strips of brushed copper.
At the back, a narrow bootlid and rear bumper enhance the sporty profile. The short overhangs of the Countryman have been cut back even further by the removal of some crash protection, while the unique 19-inch copper-rimmed alloys are pushed into the corners, giving the newcomer a more dynamic stance. Blacked out C-pillars create an Evoque-style floating roof, while a subtle spoiler protrudes from the rear edge.
The jumbo brake lights sit horizontally – they’re vertical on the Countryman – while the housings curve around the back of the car. They flow into the shape of the bulging wheelarches, further adding to the impression of a wider, lower model.
The roof has been dropped by 20mm at the front and 40mm at the back to create the dramatic sloping effect. However, the blacked-out windows are more of a practical consideration, because the interior design isn’t finished yet.
For a show car, the styling is remarkably restrained, which hints at how close the Paceman is to production. MINI has also confirmed that the showroom version will sit alongside the Countryman in the range, rather than above it.
Under the bonnet, the Paceman will eventually use the most powerful engine in the current range: the 1.6-litre turbo with the full John Cooper Works tuning. This delivers 207bhp and up to 280Nm of torque to all four wheels. Lower power petrol and diesel versions would also be made available.

Ford, Volkwagen and Chrysler expand recall notices.

Ford Motor Co. has not made enough of an effort to tell customers about the recall issued for its Windstar minivans, said the family of a Massachusetts man who died when his van’s rear axle split in half and sent the van into a building.
The family of Sean Bowman said they got Fords’ recall notice in October, one week after Bowman died.
Ford had announced the recall in August. It affected 575,000 older Windstar minivans where the company said rear axles could become fragile and break. However, the recall did not attract a lot of media attention.
Ford said this week that it planned to expand the recall and cooperate with a government investigation, but the company had no comment on the Bowman case.
In addition, this week, Volkswagen and Chrysler announced large recalls because of possible air bag problems and fuel leaks.
Chrysler said it was recalling around 367,000 minivans because of problems with the air bags deploying accidentally. The recall affects the 2008 Chrysler Town and Country and the Dodge Grand Caravan.
Volkswagen of America said it was recalling some 228,000 vehicles, including the Golf, Rabbit, Jetta and Jetta Sportswagen for model years 2007-2009 and the 2006-2010 New Beetle.
Volkswagen said the problem in the Golf, Rabbit and Jetta was due to plastic tab connected to the windshield fluid canister that could possibly come in contact with a fuel line and cause a leak to form. In the New Beetle, a fastening clamp on the power steering system could lead to the same kind of problem.
***Now i'm wondering what car is safe to drive these days.

Tats Group Global Sales Increase.

There couldn't be any time better for Tata Motors which has posted Cumulative sales for the fiscal (April-November 2010) were 678,598 vehicles, higher by 30 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2009-10
"While the group global sales were 79,959, cumulative sales for the fiscal were 678,598," a spokesperson said.
"Global sales of all commercial vehicles - Tata, Tata Daewoo and the Tata Hispano Carrocera range - were 40,244 in November 2010, a growth of 21 percent. Cumulative sales for the fiscal were 314,567, a growth of 29 percent," he added.
Global sales of Jaguar Land Rover in November 2010 were 22,957, higher by 22 percent. Jaguar sales for the month were 5,621, higher by 30 percent, while Land Rover sales were 17,336, higher by 20 percent.

2011 Jeep Cherokee can never be more grander.

I can't confirm that the "Trail Rated" 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will plow through 18 inches of water without conking out.
I won't swear that it can step over 10-inch logs without getting hung up on a hunk of timber.
And I have no idea if it can climb up the side of a peak with the aplomb of a Sherpa mountain guide.
I can't confirm any of those capabilities because during a week behind the wheel of a new Grand Cherokee Laredo, the closest it got to going off-road was a gravel driveway.
But I can tell you unequivocally that the Grand Cherokee excels on the terrain where it is most likely going to be driven most often: In stop-and-go traffic and on the interstate at 70 mph.
Actually, "excels" might not be enough of a superlative to describe the Grand Cherokee's on-road performance. After spending nearly 15 hours in a Laredo 4x4 during a 900-mile round trip on mostly highways, I anointed the Grand Cherokee one of the best SUVs I've ever driven on the highway.
Think Range Rover at half the price. The Grand Cherokee's road manners are that good.
It is quiet enough for the driver to carry on a conversation with a backseat passenger without either raising their voice --at 85 mph. It rides as smoothly as a luxury touring sedan. And it holds the road well enough, tracks unerringly straight enough and responds competently enough to make driving long distances a tireless proposition.
I've tested some similarly utilitarian crossovers with comparable characteristics. What distinguishes the Grand Cherokee is that it comes with Jeep's pedigree, which means that while it may not run circles around most competitors, it can probably run over them.
Everyone knows Jeep's reputation for building vehicles with remarkable off-road prowess. I've driven Wranglers over boulders and through ponds. I've seen older Grand Cherokees make their way unabated through axle-deep mud.

Recall round up.

It's time for another rootin'-tootin' recall roundup, and it looks like the 2011 models are looking to get a head start on potentially dangerous quality defects: Three auto manufacturers are already announcing recalls on 2011 models, and it's not even New Year's.

The 2011 Toyota Sienna is being recalled for a braking defect.
Anyway, there's a whole herd of recalls to cover here, so let's get along, little doggies.
•Honda is recalling 143,083 2007-2008 Honda Fit hatchbacks over a faulty wiring harness that can cause the car's headlights to go out unexpectedly, something that can be especially inconvenient in the dead of winter when much of the country goes dark around 5 p.m.
•Chrysler is recalling 367,350 2008 Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans. The problem: a water leak caused by improperly assembled air-conditioning drains could produce an "inadvertent air bag deployment" on the passenger side of the vehicle.
•One more for the Mopar contingent: Chrysler is recalling 76,122 2010-2011 Dodge Ram trucks over the Hydroboost brake system in diesel models, which can build up excessive vent pressure, causing brake lights that are slow to extinguish and increasing the risk of a crash.
•General Motors is recalling 97,843 2011 Cadillac SRX, Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs over a safety belt buckle anchor that could fracture in an accident, making it probably less effective as a safety device, I would imagine.
•Volkswagen announced a recall of 377,000 2007-2009 Golf, Jetta and Jetta SportWagen models, 2006-2010 New Beetles and 2007-2009 Rabbits. The issue is a fuel line prone to chafing against a small plastic tab, causing a fuel leak, which is bad, apparently. From the recall announcement: "Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire."
•Last, but not least, what recall roundup would be complete without a Toyota recall? Luckily, the company is recalling 94,126 2011 Sienna minivans over the placement of the switch that shuts off the van's brake lights. That could cause it to be damaged, leaving the brake lights on even when the brake pedal is not being pressed down. Worse still, the brakes could inadvertently become partially engaged, degrading brake performance.
That's all for now, folks. Does anyone own any of these vehicles? Does seeing a lot of recalls for a brand make you less likely to buy one of its cars? Happy trails.

Honda and Ford Ranks highest in customer retention survey.

Are we starting to see a bit of light at the end of the Great Recession tunnel? Are car buyers ready to have a little fun, fun, fun again?
It would seem so, as new-vehicle owners are increasingly citing fun-to-drive vehicles as a top reason for remaining loyal to their current brand, according to the new 2010 Customer Retention Study released last week by J.D Power and Associates.
Ford and Honda ranked highest in the survey – tying for first place – when it comes to retaining vehicle owners, each retaining 62 percent of their owners.
The Winners
Ford's high retention rate was primarily driven by the Edge, F-Series and Fusion models. Two of those models – the Edge and the Fusion – are relatively new, having been introduced in the last few years.
"So, that's a good sign for Ford," observed Raffi Festekjian, director of automotive product research at J.D. Power and Associates. "Ford seems to be doing the right things. In our initial quality study this year, Ford ranked higher than it's ever ranked – 5th place."
For Honda, meanwhile, it was the Accord, CR-V and Pilot that primarily drove their high retention rate.
When comparing the two brands, the study revealed that Ford owners are more likely than are Honda owners to say that they've stayed loyal because their new vehicle is fun to drive or features snappy styling. Conversely, Honda owners were more likely than Ford owners to identify resale value and safety as the main reasons for buying another Honda.
"Honda has been a consistently strong performer in this survey. Hondas have always been on the top tier with it comes to retention – their owners pretty consistently cite safety and resale value," said Festekjian.
That said, the study showed that fewer owners are citing more practical reasons, like anticipated resale value, as a reason for their loyalty to their current brand. The importance of having fun-to-drive vehicles increased by eight percent compared to last year, while the importance of resale value dropped by 10 percent over that same period.
What Price Loyalty?
The customer retention study, which has been conducted for the last eight years, measures the rate at which car brands keep their existing customers and asks owners why they remain loyal. Customer retention is always key to a brand's success in the marketplace, especially during a recession or slow economic recovery -- times when every sale is crucial to the bottom line.
The study also measures how well the various brands "capture" consumers who were previously driving other brands -- or, as it's known in the car biz, "conquest." The importance of vehicles being fun-to-drive has also increased as a reason why some brands are able to lure new customers away from competitors. In the new study, styling was also cited when it came to conquesting.
The 2010 Customer Retention Study is based on responses from 123,601 new-vehicle buyers and lessees. Of those, 81,350 replaced a vehicle that they had purchased new. The study was conducted between February and May, and between August and October, of this year
"This is a key study, because it's important to understand the reasons that drive loyalty within the industry," said Festekjian. "Customer retention is the primary goal of every manufacturer. It obviously has a direct impact on sales, and it fosters a favorable word of mouth."
Best Of The Rest
Ford and Honda didn't "beat out" their competitors by much. In a three-way tie for second, Hyundai, Lexus and Toyota each scored retention grades of 60 percent. Kia boasted the strongest increase in customer-retention compared to last year – the Korean carmaker improved by 21 percentage points in one year, notching a score of 58 percent in 2010.
Toyota's yearlong woes -- the Congressional hearings into the acceleration problems, the myriad recalls, etc. -- did not seem to hurt their ability to retain customers. "Toyota has historically also been in the top tier, and their current customers remain pretty loyal," said Festekjian. "The challenge Toyota now faces is the ability to conquest new customers, because now those buyers now have some questions about Toyota. In this survey, Toyota did, in fact, see a drop in their conquesting."
It's The Economy
Festekjian confirmed that customer retention is also critical during tough economic times, or during a sluggish recovery like the current one. "With total sales down, and with consumers having so many more choices now, it's really important for the carmakers to know why they're retaining customers, because it's a lot easier to retain a customer than to conquest a new one," he said.
But, since the economy and car market are improving, if only slightly, car owners are increasingly returning to citing emotional, rather than practical, reasons for staying with their current brand or switching to a different one, Festekjian added. "Developing new models that are fun to drive, with more attractive styling, seems to be increasingly more critical for automakers, as they continue to try to retain and conquest customers as the auto market continues to recover."

Mercedes delivers its first F-Cell vehicle.

While Nissan and GM were racing to deliver their first electric and extended range electric vehicles to customers this week, Mercedes-Benz quietly handed over the keys of an F-Cell hydrogen car to its new owner in California.
Mercedes-Benz posted photos of the delivery on its Facebook page, marking the first of 70 or so hydrogen vehicles that California drivers can lease from the luxury carmaker over the next few years. The compact F-Cell uses hydrogen to power the 134-horsepower electric motor and achieves a 240-mile zero-emissions range.
Drivers can lease the vehicle from Mercedes-Benz for $850 per month--a steep price for participating in a research program--but the upside is that they won't have to pay for gas. California hasn't approved the codes and standards for measuring and dispensing hydrogen, and until then the fuel is free for fuel-cell customers at public refueling stations. When the codes are finalized, California Fuel Cell Partnership spokesperson Chris White says hydrogen will initially cost about $5-6 per kilogram. The Mercedes-Benz F-Cell holds 3.7 kilograms, so a fill-up would cost about $20, but the price of hydrogen should be halved as production ramps up over the next few years.
Even as production increases, demand will remain small. Mercedes plans to lease a total of 200 F-Cells, and the U.S. is expected to receive only a third of the fleet. The company is still fielding applications for the next batch of F-Cells, and prospective customers can apply on Mercedes-Benz's microsite. However, because hydrogen fueling stations are few and far between, interested parties need to live in the Los Angeles or San Francisco Bay area.

New auto sales expected to fall in 2011 to lowest level in 34 years

Sales of new automobiles in Japan next year are likely to decrease 9.9% from this year to 4,465,000 units, marking the lowest level in 34 years, an industry body said Friday.
The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association attributed the envisaged decrease to termination of the government’s subsidies for environmentally friendly vehicles in September as well as to the uncertain outlook of the nation’s economy.
The estimated figure is a drop of more than 40% from 1990, when the annual total sales of new cars peaked at 7,777,493 units. It is also the lowest level since 1977, when annual sales logged 4,194,249 units.
By category, sales of automobiles other than minivehicles are forecast to witness a drop of 13.3% to 2,808,000 units, while sales of minivehicles are likely to fall 3.6% to 1,657,000 units.
Toshiyuki Shiga, chairman of the association, said at a press conference Friday that for several months from January next year, sales are expected to see a year-on-year monthly drop of over 10%.
‘‘We hope to see a year-on-year monthly increase from around fall through the launch of new cars and sales promotions,’’ he said, while adding that global sales would remain strong due to recovery in the U.S. market and robust demand in China.

LPG for vehicles in the Philipines.

Concerned about the high price of oil in the world market, the Department of Energy (DoE) pushed for the use of liquefied petroleum gas or LPG as an alternative fuel for automobiles.
The move was strongly pushed by DoE officials during the “2010 Energy Industry Forum” at downtown hotel and restaurant here over the weekend.
The energy forum is part of the continuing collaboration of the DoE and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to increase awareness among consumers.
Before some 155 energy stakeholders and local officials, DoE-Visayas official Jose Rey C. Maleza disclosed that there is a need to use LPG in an effort to mitigate the impact brought about by the high price of oil now confronted by all consuming public.
Maleza emphasized that there is no problem when converting automobile gas engine to an LPG-operated engine because they have the same heating capacity and needs with the conventional gasoline engine.
“Aside from that, based on simulation, the LPG-fueled automobile is faster compared to a gasoline-fueled automobile,” said Maleza.
Autogas is the common name for LPG when it is used as a fuel in internal combustion engines in vehicles.
The same equipment is also used for similar engines in stationary applications such as generators.
Some public community vehicle operators are already using the LPG as an alternative fuel for automobiles, and the DoE encourages more operators to use LPG to also minimize even their expenses.
However, the DoE officials at the Energy Stakeholders Forum warned that only Auto-LPG stations are authorized to sell LPG for automobile purposes and not for household use.
They added that domestic or household cylinders are not allowed to be refilled in any Auto-LPG dispensing stations.

Range Rover sport HSE.

THE Range Rover is one of the great British success stories.
As one of the great icons of modern times it’s a vehicle that is much feted - and much bought, writes Rob Auchterlonie..
And you don’t have to be an overpaid footballer or have blonde hair and a pair of Gucci sunglasses parked on the top of your head to own one.
You only have to glance at your average queue of traffic to see how popular the Range Rover Sport is. They’re everywhere, the discerning choice of motorists who want to buy British because in this instance British is tub-thumpingly best.
It’s been praised the world over and if you think you’re going to read anything other than that here then you’re mistaken.
Of course, it’s not faultless. You can look at any car and there will always be something that doesn’t quite ring true.
But the sum of the overall parts usually far outweighs any minus points. And that’s very definitely the case with Solihull’s finest.
For something capable of tackling terrain slightly more rugged than the A421 it’s a supremely comfortable vehicle. So much so that you could almost forgive George Michael dozing off behind the wheel. Actually, no you can’t. No one should be in charge of any form of motorised transport when they’re completely gazeboed on drugs or anything else. Not the sort of publicity Land Rover relish – they prefer the good stuff, like the announcement that the factories are safe, thousands of new jobs are to be created and that there’s widespread anticipation of the arrival of the baby Rangie, the new Evoque.
The Sport is the slightly stockier and snappier version of the full blown Range Rover, and while it might not quite appear to have the full blown ‘drive through the jungle’ credentials of its stablemates, there’s still a healthy 227mm of obstacle clearance and a 700mm wading depth when the river bank bursts. Or put another way, if you’re vertically challenged you’re going to need a hand up into the passenger seats.
From where you’ll be wafted to your destination amidst a classy mix of leather, wood, aluminium and a top notch sound system.
For the person in control (we won’t call him George in this instance) there are more buttons than on a big girl’s blouse when it comes to piloting the Sport, offering a setting for just about every conceivable road condition you might encounter.
Of course, a large number of owners will glance at them, panic and then reach forward to the touch screen to select their favourite music or the sat nav.
But it’s reassuring to know that there’s not a lot that can stop you reaching your destination in a Range Rover.
And when it comes to off road use, Land Rover sets the standard for others to follow, so on the latest models you get Hill Start Assist, which stops the car rolling backwards, and Gradient Acceleration Control.
There are two diesel engines to choose from, with either 211ps (520Nm) or 245ps (600Nm), both units being pretty refined and responsive when called upon. Throttle response is impressively quick and for a big vehicle the Sport still displays impressive on road poise.
This chunky car comes with an equally chunky key but you don’t need it – start up is via a push button on the dash. You just need to keep it in your pocket, or on the restaurant dining table for maximum impact.

Review: 2011 Ford explorer.

The Ford Explorer helped to start the SUV trend way back in 1990, and along the way it has gone from sales leader, to public disgrace, to also-ran SUV. It has sold in the millions and has been exported to over 90 different countries in its lifetime. With 96 percent nameplate recognition, the only Ford products that are more well known are the Mustang and the F-150, both of which have been on sale continuously for 26 and 42 more years, respectively. To say the Explorer is important to Ford’s business plan is an understatement of mammoth proportions.

So when it came time to redesign it, Ford had clear goals in mind. Better fuel economy and better driving dynamics were two of the main reasons people were saying no to SUVs. It seemed the path was clear; make it more efficient, and better to drive. But the Blue Oval did a lot more than just that. With the switch from body-on-frame to unibody, the Explorer has transformed itself from old-school SUV to new-school CUV.
If you are walking up to the Explorer for the first time, you might be surprised at its size. The designers used some clever visual tricks to make this model look smaller than the 2010 edition, but don’t let that fool you. This model boasts the same eight inches of ground clearance as the previous generation, but is almost two inches shorter, thanks to its high beltline and narrow greenhouse. The 2011 is also some four inches longer with a one-inch shorter wheelbase. It sees a six-inch increase in width, with subsequent six-inch increases in the front and rear track. The increases in track and decreases in wheelbase might seem rather small, but both play a major role in how the vehicle drives. The wider the track, the more stable the vehicle will be, while a shorter wheelbase will make the vehicle willing to rotate and offer a more car-like experience. >>>>>>read more

Update on the new electric cars.

The Nissan Leaf is one of the first electric cars on the market in the U.S. Some critics worry that if everyone drives an electric-powered vehicle here in California, it may cause a strain on the power grid. KMJ asked some experts, and they say, not so. Jim Boyd is a commissioner with the California Energy Commission. Their goal is to get 1,000,000 electric cars on the road by 2020.
"No, we won't be in trouble. The electric grid is more than capable of handling 1,000,000 vehicles." so he said.
Dr. Mark Duvall with the Electric Power Research Institute, a Palo Alto-based think tank agrees. He says the cars would only increase peak demand during the summer by 2%. When you charge also makes a difference.
"(There) is really cheap electricity at night. That places hardly any stress on the grid, because our load in California is really low at night relative to what it would be in a hot summer afternoon."
So the Idea is drive your car during the day and charge it at night, and make sure you don't run out of batteries while on a trip, that could cause you a great deal of trouble...Seems interesting.

Honda Civic SiR 2-door Tops the list of most stolen vehicles in Canada.

A 10-year-old import sport compact is the most popular car among thieves across the country, according to a recent report by the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
You may want to be wary if you’re the owner of a two-door 2000 Honda Civic SiR -- it’s the most stolen car in Ontario and Canada, the insurance bureau said Thursday.
The 1999 model of the same vehicle ranks second on the list both provincially and nationally.
The other vehicles on the list are high-end models, including Cadillac Escalades, Hummers, a Land Rover, an Audi S4 Quattro and various Acuras.
It’s believed organized crime groups are responsible for many thefts of high-end vehicles. The cars are stripped for parts which are then shipped overseas. Last month, the federal government passed Bill S-9, which gives Canadian Border Services the right to seize stolen vehicles intended for export.
In 2009, 108,172 vehicles were stolen across the country – 27,175 of them in Ontario – according to Statistics Canada.
Here’s a look at the top 10 stolen vehicles in Ontario:

1. 2000 Honda Civic SiR 2-door
2. 1999 Honda Civic SiR 2-door

New collaboration between Nissan and Mitsubishi

Nissan and Mitsubishi have announced that they will be expanding their cooperation, sharing vehicles, infrastructures and expertise to create new models in the months and years to come, increasing both automakers’ competitiveness around the world.
Nissan has already signed agreements to provide Mitsubishi with a light van/wagon for the Japanese market, and Mitsubishi has conversely agreed to provide Nissan with a sport utility vehicle destined for the Middle East.
Both manufacturers are reportedly studying a project that would enable them to produce Nissan’s Navara (or Frontier) pickup in a Mitsubishi factory in Thailand. What’s more, the Japanese companies are considering teaming up to design a new one-ton pickup and to produce and engineer sub-compact models for the Japanese market.
Nissan and Mitsubishi had already signed cooperation agreements for the manufacturing of sub-compact and commercial vehicles in Japan, and both automakers stressed that the announcement of this collaboration complements the global partnerships already in place.
According to Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of Nissan, “This agreement is important for Nissan as it supports our expansion in emerging markets, meets immediate capacity needs overseas, and enables us to grow our mini car business in Japan. ».
Mitsubishi’s president, Osamu Masuko, is equally satisfied by this agreement: “I believe that the expansion of our OEM agreement will complement each others' regional characteristics and product lineup, and the one-ton pickup and mini car projects will be the best solution to strengthen each others' competitiveness.”

Group offers ideas on charging hybrid vehicles

Although It will be a challenge to put all those cars on the grid and build a network of outlets to juice charge them. Plug-in advocates argue that the state's failure to meet that challenge 10 years ago delayed new technology for cars.

The California Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative includes state and local agencies and industry groups that say they’ve got ideas for making things work more smoothly as more plug-in cars hit the road.
Those ideas include easing rules in condo and apartment buildings for chargers, figuring out off-peak rates for overnight juicing, and streamlining the process of applying for a home charging system at your local city hall.
Mercedes-Benz has just admitted it is likely to fall short of the top spot in luxury car sales in the US this year, and accepts third place behind Lexus and BMW. Meanwhile, Lexus is set to top sales for the year once again.
Although German auto makers BMW and Mercedes-Benz have closed the gap somewhat this year, Lexus will remain as the top-selling luxury brand in the US. Toyota’s luxury arm has been at the top since 2000 and Mercedes-Benz US president doesn’t see this changing any time in the immediate future.
Ernst Lieb, Mercedes-Benz US president, recently said at a meeting in Detroit, “I’m pretty sure we’ll be number three”, in regards to this year’s sales. And he expects BMW to take second spot.
The company did come close to BMW last month though, only falling short by 545 vehicle sales. Lieb said, “they are pushing extremely hard” BMW, but says none of the two companies are going to make up enough to catch Lexus.

Karim Habib returns to BMW.

Karim Habib, former Team Leader for Advanced Design at BMW, joined Mercedes-Benz earlier this month, becoming Head of Advanced Design at the German automaker's Stuttgart studio. Habib will work under newly appointed Mercedes-Benz Head of Design, Gorden Wagener.
Habib, 38, was born in Beirut, Lebanon and attended elementary school in Iran, France and Greece before moving to Montreal, Canada in 1982. He earned his Bachelor's degree in engineering from McGill University in Montreal prior to studying automotive design.
Following a year at Art Center Europe in Switzerland, Habib studied at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and began his automotive design career at BMW AG in Munich, Germany, shortly after earning his degree.
Credited for having designed the latest BMW 7 Series and the Concept CS unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in 2007, Habib's first project working at BMW was the interior of the E60 5 Series.
"BMW was my life for ten years and I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it," Habib told us.
Over his decade-long career at BMW, Habib worked on a multitude of concepts and production vehicles as he rose through the ranks within Advanced Design, starting first as an automotive designer, then becoming senior exterior designer of the F01/F02 (7 Series) project, before finally securing the role of Team Leader Advanced Design for the BMW Group.
When asked why he had chosen to leave BMW, a company that experiences very little turnover in its design department, Habib said: "Sometimes in life you have to accept new challenges, go against the grain and expand your horizons."
"Mercedes-Benz is a brand with a lot of history and a lot of opportunity," he added.

The Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet

It bills itself as the world's first all-wheel drive crossover convertible. With its never seen before design and custom boutique style, the Murano CrossCabriolet is certainly unlike anything on the road - blending the upright stance of a crossover with the open air enjoyment of a convertible. You have to hand it to Nissan, the company certainly isn't afraid of testing the water. The transformation of the Murano body from Crossover to CrossCabriolet and from 4-door to 2-door meant more than just removing the top. Along with creating new front doors (7.9 inches longer than 4-door Murano front doors) and eliminating the B-pillars, the structure has been reinforced from the A-pillar rearward. The cloth convertible top also includes a rear glass skylight, helping create a wide-open interior environment even with the top in the closed position. Dual Pop-up Roll Bars are also standard. The coefficient of drag remains close to that of the hardtop Murano, just 0.39 Cd versus 0.37 Cd.
One of the keys to the CrossCabriolet's design's success is the convertible top's exceptionally compact size when stowed, which allows both additional interior and cargo volume (normally taken up by a traditional convertible stowage design). The hydraulically operated top mechanism includes an automatic power latch/unlatch system. Operation switches are located on the centre console and driver's door handle. With the top down, the stowed size is similar to that of a conventional 2-seat roadster. Boot capacity with the top down is 7.6 cubic feet, enough to fit two sets of golf clubs or two carry-on suitcases. With the top closed, cargo capacity expands to 12.3 cubic feet.
Along with the unique convertible top appearance, the Murano CrossCabriolet exterior also includes High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon projector headlights with auto on/off function, front fog lights and Nissan 370Z-inspired LED taillights.
Other features include body-coloured front and rear bumpers, chrome door handles, body-coloured dual power/heated outside mirrors, and rear window defroster with timer. Along with convertible style, the CrossCabriolet offers the high ground clearance of a Murano for easy ingress and egress and enhanced driver visibility.
The car's drivetrain is shared with the all-wheel drive hardtop Murano, starting with the proven "D" platform and standard 3.5-litre 24-valve DOHC V6 petrol engine producing 265 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. Suffice to say, the car would probably require a diesel engine for Europe.
The advanced all-wheel drive system connects the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system, yaw sensors, wheel slip sensors and steering angle sensors to distribute torque according to driving conditions.
The luxurious Murano CrossCabriolet interior starts with a foundation of the top-of-the-line Murano LE and takes it to the next level of standard features and convenience items. The tall windscreen and A-pillar design combines with the body's high beltline and high rear seat shoulders to help reduce conventional interior air turbulence with the top down, allowing conversation between occupants.
Premium materials are used throughout, with the standard leather-appointed seats available in a diagonally quilted premium leather, double-stitched pattern for added elegance. The long list of standard features includes 8-way power heated driver's seat with power lumbar support, 4-way manual heated front passenger seat with easy entry function, heated steering wheel, 2-position driver's seat memory system for seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors, passenger seat easy entry release button on instrument panel for driver access, driver and front passenger seatback pocket, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and Nissan Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition.
The distinctive Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet is scheduled to go on sale in the USA in early 2011, although there are currently no definite plans to bring it to Europe.

Hyundai-Kia to use dual-clutch gearbox, CVT from 2011

The dual-clutch gearbox, popularised by Volkswagen and adopted by the likes of Ford, Volvo, BMW and Porsche today, will find its way into Hyundai-Kia vehicles from next year. First out with be a six-speed unit, followed by a seven speeder, supplied by Germany’s LUK and branded as Parallel Shift Gearbox (PSG).
Like VW’s DSG, PSG has two computer operated clutches, one handling even gears and the other odd gears. Compared to a torque converter automatic, shift speed and efficiency are improved, but it’s the latter Hyundai is chasing after. “To improve our fuel economy, we are aggressively trying to apply various technologies,” Dr Woong-chul Yang, president of Hyundai-Kia’s R&D division said.
The “various tech” mentioned includes the continuously variable transmissions (CVT), which will be introduced in smaller models to boost mileage. In the US, Hyundai has announced plans to lift its corporate average fuel economy rating to 50 mpg (17.7 km/l) by 2025. Four upcoming models including the new Elantra (Avante for us) will get at least 40 mpg or 14.2 km/l on the highway. Transmissions are key, but other measures include direct-injection engines, turbochargers and hybrid tech.
Reports from Australia say that the recipients of the PSG will include the ix35 and i45, which we know as the Tucson and Sonata respectively.

Breaking news

Land Rover will skip the hybrid powertrain version of their new compact Evoque crossover and instead apply the new technology to their truck-based LR4, a company spokesman said.
“Our approach to Evoque is more viable for the company and customers because hybrid technology on a relatively small car would load the price and add weight. That technology is better suited to larger cars, probably from Discovery upwards,” said Land Rover’s John Edwards.
Land Rover is also expecting a majority of buyers to opt for four-wheel drive, due to the brand’s strong off-road heritage. The level of conquest buyers is also expected to be between 70 and 80 percent – and quite honestly, with a vehicle this good looking, we wouldn’t be surprised if this prediction came true.

Fast and Furious V :You can make fun of the series all you want... but you know you are going to watch the next installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. The fifth film, called Fast 5, is set to hit theaters (including IMAX) on April 29th, 2011. Paul Walker and Vin Diesel are back again reprising the lead roles of Dom and Brian. Also back are Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Sung Kang (which is surprising since we're pretty sure he died in Tokyo Drift, no?).Fast 5 takes place in Rio de Janeiro, where the crew is forced to perform "one last job" in order to earn their freedom. A new law enforcement agent stands in their way – played by none other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The film will surely be filled with plenty of gratuitous vehicular action that looks great on camera while breaking every conceivable law of physics.
The trailer for the film, which is available after the jump, features only a few clear shots at some of the cars in the flick. We spy (deep breath) an E39 5 Series, a pair of matte black Charger police cars, a modified 350Z, a resto-mod Charger, a few glimpses of parked Porsches, some assorted SUVs that are promptly trashed, an old VW bus, a Ford GT, what appears to be a Mongoose Motorsports Corvette Grand Sport Roadster replica, a Nissan GT-R and a few others we may have missed.

2011 Kia Optima SX : Review.

In an alternate universe, we're tearing through the blissfully serpentine asphalt twisting through Topanga Canyon outside of Los Angeles; a pull of the steering wheel paddle shifter drops the transmission into second before we enter a sweeping corner. Hard on the brakes, and then back into throttle to power out; we're now three-up in the new turbocharged 2011 Kia Optima SX, and quickly bearing down upon a BMW 5 Series. Sound like a dream? Hardly: the Optima SX hungrily devours challenging corners, and its turbocharged engine backs up its good looks with plenty of bite.

The 2011 Optima SX is part of an ongoing paradigm shift for Kia. Until very recently, the Korean automaker was content in building the blandest of transportation devices, designed neither to offend nor excite, and priced at bargain-basement levels. Now they're done with that. Over the past year, Kia has introduced disturbingly appealing vehicles at market-beating prices, and doing its best to shake its previously dodgy image. With the Optima SX, Kia has built a car that can legitimately vie for the title of best midsize family sedan on the market.
Let's not pretend about what we're looking at here. Since Hyundai and Kia are corporate bosom buddies, nearly all the hard parts and mechanical bits beneath the skin are shared with the also-new Hyundai Sonata Turbo. As is the case with the base Optima, the chassis features a McPherson strut front suspension, a multi-link setup in back, and a complete alphabet soup of stability aids. The top-of-the-line SX model receives upgraded 12.6-inch front discs, more aggressive damper tuning, and -- most importantly -- the all-new Theta Turbo GDI  . read more >>>>>>>>

Pamela Anderson: Beauty and the beast.

The Range Rover looks gorgeous and that striking white finish is probably the best choice Pamela should have made for such a car. Of course, we can't know for sure if the SUV is indeed Pamela's or she's just driving it but the simple fact that she's seen behind the wheel of a Range Rover is applaudable.
As for Pamela, we don't know for sure what happened but she no longer makes staring at some digital photos attractive. Not only because her gray outfit looks pretty weird, but also because her face appears to be some kind of drawing table for kids. Truth is, Pamela Anderson was a real beauty when younger, but the first signs of the numerous surgeries she had in the past are making themselves noticed.
We won't go further with this story because the beautiful memories remain and we'd really want to keep Pamela in our minds as the hot bunny that smiled from the walls of our bedrooms.

Nissan Navara 2011: Review.

The luxury of a flagship SUV, the rugged ability of an off-roader and, for business drivers, plenty of tax benefits... there’s plenty to like about today’s pick-up trucks.

Nissan’s Navara Double Cab is one of the finest on the market – and it’s been given a fresh look inside and out, plus a 3.0-litre V6 diesel has been introduced.
Is it the best version yet?
The Navara has never been shy or retiring, and an all-new nose, revised headlights, more aerodynamic bumpers and 18-inch alloy wheels make it even more distinctive.
Inside, the influence of the 370Z coupé is clear in the revised centre console, which gets chunky, quality switchgear.
There’s also lots of equipment in flagship Outlaw spec, including cruise control, sat-nav and a 6GB music hard drive. Oh, and a rear parking camera – very useful, as the Navara is 5.2 metres long!
The brawny 228bhp 3.0-litre diesel engine produces 550Nm of torque, allowing the Nissan to carry 1,069kg in its vast load bed and tow a 3,000kg trailer. Thanks to selectable four-wheel drive and a rugged ladder frame chassis, the newcomer is capable off-road, while it’s pretty comfortable on tarmac, too. Our only gripe is that the ride becomes unsettled all too easily. But as a working tool that fulfils many roles, the Navara comes up trumps.

Replica of the world's first automobile

Edmonton businessman David Morris is the dealer principal of David Morris Fine Cars Ltd., a Mercedes-Benz dealership. This past week he took delivery of one of the most unique ``new'' cars ever shipped under the auspices of the Mercedes-Benz factory delivery system - a replica of the world's first automobile, an 1886 Benz, which M-B has dubbed the Mercedes-Benz Classic. Morris's vehicle is one of 110 commissioned by Mercedes-Benz.

``The original is in the Deutsches Museum in Munich,'' Morris said. ``A handful of these replicas were built by Daimler-Benz apprentices; another one is in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.'' Daimler-Benz AG was the corporate name for the maker of Mercedes-Benz automobiles up to 1998; it is now called Daimler AG.
According to Mercedes-Benz, Benz's original design was the first automobile that was not based on a converted carriage, as previous inventors had done.
Morris, who flew in from his winter residence in California to uncrate his new showpiece (which is now displayed prominently in his dealership's new- vehicle showroom, was bitten by the car bug at an early age. A framed black-and- white photo shows him as a young boy sitting behind the wheel of an English pedal car. Later, he successfully raced Formula Ford open-wheel race cars, and eventually sponsored the late Canadian racing legend Gilles Villeneuve when he was racing Formula Atlantic cars before becoming one of the world's most renowned racers, driving Ferrari Formula 1 cars.
In addition to owning the Mercedes dealership, Morris is a Rolls-Royce enthusiast and currently has one undergoing restoration.
Of the 110 Mercedes-Benz Classics built and made available to Mercedes-Benz dealers, Morris says the majority of them have been sold into Europe and Asia. Morris's three-wheeler is believed to be the only one in private hands in North America.

Daimler celebrates it's 125th Birthday.

125 years after Carl Benz filed his “Vehicle with gas engine drive” under Patent number 37435 at the Berlin Patent Office in 1886, Daimler AG is celebrating the motor car’s birthday.

On January 29, 2011, the inventor of the automobile is inviting international guests from the automotive sector, personalities from the world of politics, economy and society to a celebration at the Mercedes-Benz World in Stuttgart. The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Angela Merkel, is to be the guest of honour of the evening. The list of guests includes numerous friends and partners of Daimler. This event is to be the starting point of a jubilee year with multiple activities centred on the motor car’s 125th anniversary.
Dr Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “The invention of Daimler and Benz changed the world for the better - and it will continue to do so. As the inventor we also have the claim to shape the future of mobility: with fascinating brands, green technologies and new business opportunities. We have many ideas!"
The consistent further development of ideas, the will to permanent improvement and the firm belief in one’s success were the remarkable characteristics of the founding fathers of Daimler AG . 125 years on, those leading principles still form the unshakeable basis of Daimler’s philosophy and will remain its guiding star in the future.

Honda and Ford lead in customer retention.

Ford (F) and Honda (HMC) owners, more than those of any others, are opting to get another vehicle of the same brand. Both brands topped J.D. Power's latest Customer Retention Study, which was based on 123,601 responses from new-car buyers. In 81,350 of those cases, the car being replaced had also been purchased new by that owner.
Sixty-two percent of Ford and Honda owners remained with those brands, while Kia (KIMTF.PK) was the most improved overall in retention. According to the survey, this year 58 percent purchased another Kia but last year, just 37 percent were repeat buyers of the brand. Mercedes-Benz (DAI) fell by five points, to 59 percent.
The Ford F-Series pickup, Ford Edge crossover, and Ford Fusion sedan drive strong customer retention for Ford, says Power, while the Accord, CR-V, and Pilot are among the strongest Honda models with strong retention.
Ford owners are even more likely than Honda owners to perceive their vehicle as fun to drive or as having good styling, which Power says has become increasingly important.
Resale value has actually become less important to shoppers; as a reason to stay loyal to a brand, as a factor, it was down ten percentage points just from 2009 -- perhaps an indication that recession worries are easing.
Raffi Festekjian, director of automotive product research at J.D. Power and Associates, said in a release with the results:
Now that economic and market conditions have improved somewhat, vehicle owners are increasingly citing emotional, rather than practical, reasons for staying with their vehicle brand or switching to a different one.
Hyundai (HYMLF.PK), Lexus, and Toyota (TOT) -- all with a 60-percent retention rate -- follow Ford and Honda. Mercedes-Benz, Kia, and Subaru (SBUOF.PK) were also among the brands with a strong rate of retention well above the industry average of 48 percent.
Among major brands, Saab has just a four-percent retention rate, while Jaguar, Dodge (PD), Chrysler, and Scion rounded up the bottom of the list, all with 25 percent or lower retention.
J.D. Power says retention overall has improved slightly from last year; 16 of the 34 brands in the survey have improved retention from 2009, while 14 have declined or remained the same.
Retention of domestic brands rose very slightly this year, but Power points out that 69 percent of those who trade in a vehicle from a domestic brand get another domestic-brand vehicle. For import owners, 90 percent purchased another import.

2012 ML-Class Spied.

The upcoming Mercedes Benz ML-Class has been spotted testing in the wild, and with it comes a lot of speculation for the SUV. It appears to be a cross between a G-Class and an R-Class, and the company has already said that the ML-Class will be focusing more on efficiency instead of performance.

Due sometime in mid-2011, there are yet to be any concrete details leaked about the new car. All of the speculation has so far been based on the previous spy shots of the vehicle. There are even some reports that hint at an ML-Class powered by a hybrid diesel and electric power train. Of course, there’s the ML450 Hybrid that’s expected to be launched sometime in 2011 as well, featuring a gasoline electric hybrid power source.
The Euro ML models are slated to get 204-horsepower 2.2L four-cylinder engines, with planned V6 gasoline engines also said to be in the works. There will also likely be an AMG variant that carries a 5.5L twin-turbo direct-injection V8 that should be good for 570hp at the very least.
The leading consumer 4×4 in the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup should be officially unveiled by the time the 2011 Geneva Show comes around in March. Whether we’ll also see a reported plug-in hybrid version of the ML450 Hybrid is another question.

BMW sales figures rises.

Luxury car major BMW has managed to post great sales figures across the globe this year and is very upbeat about its success. The company has its presence across the globe with 24 production houses in 13 countries and sales network in 140 countries.

BMW has tasted this super success after a long time with a tremendous dedicated team of committed professionals.
Sales volume of approximately 1.29 million automobiles is tremendous, and over 87,000 motorcycles for the 2009 financial year, has blown the competitors apart. Euro 50.68 billion was the final revenue of BMW.
Last year on Dec 31 the company had appointed 96,000 associates. The company credits its wonderful value chain for this and how long-term thinking and relationship building has helped strengthen their network.
Mercedes Benz last year, lost its number one position to BMW. In the Indian markets also BMW has been doing quite well and have beaten the competitor Benz in the last 11 months of the year by selling 5,345 units

Tata Motors Offers 4 year warranty on Nano.

Tata Motors will offer a four-year manufacturers warranty on Nano to boost customers' confidence as the sales of the world's cheapest car sputtered to just 509 units in November.

The auto major will offer the warranty for four years or 60,000 km, (whichever is earlier), to existing and new owners of the Nano, the company said in a statement. "The new buyers have the option of a comprehensive maintenance contract at Rs 99 a month."
The automaker was previously offering a warranty for 18 months or 24,000 km, with no maintenance on the car which cost Rs 1.23 lakh for the base model. The base model is now priced at Rs 1.37 lakh (ex showroom Delhi).
A couple of spontaneous fires, lack of easy finance to purchase the cars and rising prices have hurt sales of the Nano, which was launched as a one-lakh car for the people wanting to upgrade from a two-wheeler. The company said it sold more than 71,000 Nano cars since July 2009.
Analysts feel fire-catching incidents have raised safety issues in the minds of consumers. "The company should have introduced a scheme, a repurchase guarantee which will build confidence among the new customers," said an analyst at a Mumbai-based brokerage firm, not wanting to be identified. The company investigated the incidents and said that there were not any manufacturing defects in the car but offered additional protection in the exhaust and electrical systems.
Tata Motors attributed the decline in sales to its inaccessibility to reach smaller towns. These new schemes will help attract the first time buyers and get an emotional connect' with the customers, said a senior official of the company. "For a first time buyer, a car is a significant purchase decision and these schemes will increase affordability of the car." The company is setting up special Nano access points for customers in the hinterlands to experience and test-drive the car. Through these reach-out initiatives, coupled with customer benefits, Tata Motors will cover the entire country with open sales by March 2011.
On Wednesday, the company told its vendors that it will increase production of the Nano, hoping to restore confidence among the vendors. Nano vendors, concerned over falling sales and a cut in production, met the automobile major's top brass in Mumbai. Faced with huge pressure on margins, exclusive vendors of Nano are diverting production to other manufacturers as the domestic car market has been growing at a rate of 25-30%.

The new Kia Picanto City 2011.

Kia will replace the Picanto city car in spring 2011 - and these are the first pictures of the new 2011 small car.
The production Picanto will be shown at the Geneva motor show in March, with European sales slated to begin soon after 'from late spring 2011.' No word on if and when it will come ot the region - but with downsizing becoming fashionable we think it's likely.
The new Picanto: the latest European Kia
It's yet another design from Kia's European styling studio in Germany led by ex-Audi man Peter Schreyer.
This time a three-door will be sold alongside the five-door Picanto. The more practical one arrives first, in late spring 2011 while the three-door model arrives in time for summer.
The new Picanto will again be built in Korea, not Hyundai-Kia's Euro factory in eastern Europe.
The tech story of the new 2011 Picanto
The new city car will offer a 1.0 or 1.2 petrol for Europe - we'll probably get the 1.2 here.
The blurb claims the new Picanto exudes 'self confidence, solidity and maturity', but we'd caution that it'll have to live up to the hope of these first design sketches. All too often we've seen promising doodles dilute into routine humdrum.
Still, these first pictures of the new 2011 Picanto show a pert city car with sharp creases and a Ford-alike gaping lower grille.

First Nissan Leaf Delivered Today.

Sometime today, a car dealer in Petaluma, California, will hand Mr. Chalouhi ( remember?) the keys to his new Nissan Leaf, and the young Silicon Valley tech-exec will drive off the lot and into our collective auto future.
His new car is the first all-electric Nissan Leaf sold — and delivered — in the United States.
It’s not, of course, the first EV on the streets.
The Tesla Roadster has been out for some time. And there are other limited production EVs around. What makes this different is the numbers. By the end of 2011, Nissan plans on putting 50,000 Leafs on the American road. Another number: including rebates and tax credits, the basic Leaf costs just $20,280.

Investors hope that this kind of large scale roll-out for an affordable all-electric vehicle will make a C-change (c = charging station) in the automotive world. Having test-driven the Leaf (next week I’ll get behind the wheel of a Tesla Roadster), I’d have to agree. It may not be able to beat the Tesla’s zero-to-sixty time (a phenomenal 3.7 seconds) but it’s a practical, well-handling, fun-to-drive family car.
And — drum-roll, please — it doesn’t use gasoline.
When Chalouhi leaves the dealership he may not notice a familiar building on the corner to the west. Then again, it won’t matter to him. It’s a Chevron station. You know, a “gas station.” The kind of place Chalouhi may never have to visit again.
